Ideas and tips for a Sustainable Christmas

Advent offers us a time of peaceful, joyful waiting. For many of us the joys of the season can be interrupted by the energies of hurry and worry that broadcast themselves from adverts and offers and general invitations to spend and consume.

Here is a brief round up of some very useful ideas and tips for making this Christmas one that can be celebrated joyfully, simply, sustainably and in peaceful solidarity with all.

There is a wonderful resource from the World Wildlife Fund that gives suggestions on how to prepare for a ‘green’ Christmas. There you will find a green gift guide, some ideas about food and eating locally and for the season and some suggestions on sustainable decorations.

Sustainable Jungle have put together a blog with 17 ethical gift ideas for Christmas.

Reduce Reuse Recycle have produced a very helpful list of online shops for eco-friendly presents and some useful information on Christmas Trees. Friends of the Earth also have wealth of tips and resources here.

This year, Victoria Pace shopping centre in Woking is partnering with Woking Food Bank. There will be a donation point inside Victoria Place, Woking from the 18th of November until the 9th of December.  They are accepting donations including non-perishable food, toiletries, and Christmas food items.  Items can be dropped off in Bandstand Mall near Poundland. If you need advice on accessing Woking Food Bank's services you can visit their website.

If you want to know what the foodbank needs this year please see their Christmas shopping list here.

Also at Victoria Shopping Centre, why not avail of some Charity Gift Wrapping?

Woking Hospice will be in the centre this Christmas (the exact date will be confirmed soon) offering their gift wrapping services!

Get your gifts beautifully wrapped while supporting an important cause.

In all our preparations this Christmas, let us invite Christ into our hearts, to bless us with a simple and sustainable life, and enable us to seek justice and peace in our world while caring for our common home.
